In the interest of getting you connected to the network as quickly as
possible, I am presenting instructions that will enable you to set up your
computer for the school network.
If you wish me to do the setup for you, you will need to sign up for an appointment
to have that done. The sign up sheet will be posted outside my office in
Cottage Room 1.
In order to connect to the SMS network you must have an ethernet
adapter card in your computer. Most computers purchased recently
include an ethernet adapter. If your computer did not come with one, you must
purchase it and install it or have it installed ( I can install it for you
). You must have an ethernet cable to connect
to the data outlet in your room. (You can purchase cables at Walmart or Panoply Computers in town.)
There is are wireless access points in the library reading room, the Latane library, the A House computer room, the McCuan lounge, the
Once you have your ethernet adapter functioning, you
need to do basic network configuration for Windows XP as follows:
1. Configure
Click start, control panel, network connections, local area connection,
properties. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (
Click the radio button labeled "Obtain DNS server address
automatically"
Click OK.
Click OK again.
Close the network connections window.
2. Configure Proxy Connection
Do only one of the following:
2a.

Internet Explorer: Open up the control
panel again if it is not still open and open Internet Options. Click the
"Connections" tab at the top of the box. Click "
Firefox: click Tools, Options, Advanced, Network,
Settings. Click the radio button for "Auto-detect proxy settings for this
network”. Click OK, OK.

Open up the control panel again if it is not still open and open
Internet Options. Click the "Connections" tab at the top of the
box. Click "
Click Advanced
Click "Use the same proxy server for all protocols"
In the box labeled "Exceptions" enter webserver.sms.org
; webaccess.sms.org ; moodle.sms.org
Click OK.
Select the "General" tab. In the box "Home Page" you
can set the school intranet URL: http://webserver.sms.org/intranet/index.htm This is optional.
Click OK to close Internet Options.
3.
Enable SSL 2.0
Open Internet Options. Click the “Advanced” tab. Scroll down to security settings and make sure the box for “SSL 2.0” is checked. Click OK. Close Internet Options.
At this point, you can connect to the school network. Internet Explorer
(IE) will be able to connect to the intranet with no additional input.
When you try to browse to external web pages, the proxy server will require
authentication. It will present a login form in which you can put your
school username and password. Once you have logged in to the proxy it
will present the requested page.
You can use IE to check your Groupwise email
account. If you go to the school intranet home page at
http://webserver.sms.org/intranet/index.htm you will see a link to Groupwise WebAccess. You
can go directly to WebAccess at http://webaccess.sms.org The WebAccess page will
require you to login again. The username is your usual school
username. The password, however, is a distinct Groupwise
password that must be configured before WebAccess
will work. To set up the Groupwise password you
must open the Groupwise client on your computer or
one of the school computers, click tools, options, security and enter a
password. Check the box "No password required with eDirectory". This will be the password you must
use to access Groupwise.
Both Windows and Mac users can access their home folders using
native file access. That means you do not have to have the Novell client
software loaded. Windows users must have the Client for Microsoft
Networks enabled. This client comes built in to Windows and is usually
already enabled ( check it by going to control panel,
network connections, local area connection, properties ). In order for native file access to work, you must
register another password with me to control access to your files.
Send me a note requesting a "simple password for native file access", tell me your username, and the password you want to
use. Once this has been done you can access your home
folder by clicking MyComputer, My Network Places,
View workgroup computers, and opening Sms-serv12_w. It will ask
you to log in which you do with your username and the "simple
password" just created. Once your have logged in, you should see a
folder with your username. It is your home folder. Open it to
access your files.
If you don't want to use native file access you need to install the network
client and groupwise client. This will
automatically authenticate you to the proxy so you don't have to login multiple
times. It will provide easier access to your home folder and school
printers. Having done the previous setup you can use Internet Explorer to
connect to the school intranet home page at http://webserver.sms.org/intranet/index.htm . Click on the link "Connecting your
computer to the network". It gives you this page. Scroll down
to the following links, the first for XP and the second for
Download the network client for Windows XP in a zip file
Save the zip file to the desktop. Double-click to open
it then double click "setup" to run the network installation.
Download the
network client for Windows Vista
Save the file to the desktop and then double click on it to run the
installation program.
3. Configure Network Tree and Context
After the network client is installed you
may need to set up the Tree and Context. When the Novell login dialog
appears after you restart your computer, click the advanced button.
Click the tab "NDS"
Enter the following:
Tree: cs_tree
Context: students.sms.chschools
Server: sms-serv12
Finish logging in with your username and password as usual. You only need
to set the tree and context once. Next time you log in just enter your
username and password and click ok.
4. Configure Firewall
After the network client has been installed you must
do one additional step to allow authentication to the internet proxy. If
a firewall is enabled on your computer you must open up a port for clntrust, the porxy
authentication program, to use. You must open port number 3024 using
UDP. To do this in Windows XP sp2 you should do the following:
click start, control panel, windows firewall, exceptions, add port
Name: clntrust
Port Number: 3024
click the radio button for UDP
click ok
click ok
You should now be able to connect to the proxy server using the network client
without logging in again.
